Mini cars are getting really popular these days, and Volksagen is going to try their hand at the market with their new Volkwagen Up for 2012. Early predictions suspect that the Up will have three 1.2-liter 4-cylinder units with power outputs that range from 60 to 86 hp. Eaton is known as a company mainly concerned with juicing up and supercharging vehicles which generally guzzles up gasoline. This time around, they are also making Series Hydraulic Hybrid Systems (SHH’s). The hydraulic hybrid system is where the engine would just be a pump for hydraulics. The engine or pump stores energy in two accumulators which then are the ones which directly power the wheels of the car. This results in a lighter drive train that equates to a 50%-70% savings in fuel. Amazing ain’t it? This is truly thinking out of the box since you’re not making a new engine, but just changing the drive train or drive system itself. The first target for this system are UPS trucks and of course if all goes well, we could see this as a standard in our cars.

The target market is mainly composed of active people with environmental concerns and health concerns who live in urban centres, plus people who live nomadic lifestyles.
